Coyotes Men Improve To 3-0 With 3-1 Victory Over Univ. Of Hawaii-Hilo

SAN BERNARDINO – Junior forward Albert Cabrera scored one goal and assisted on two others Wednesday as host Cal State San Bernardino defeated University of Hawaii-Hilo, 3-1, in a non-conference men’s soccer match before 220 fans at Coyote Premier Field.

The Coyotes improved to 3-0 on the season as they now prepare for a non-conference home match next Tuesday against Concordia University Irvine. The Vulcans are now 0-3 in their Southern California swing against CCAA conference teams and will face Westmont in Santa Barbara on Saturday.

Cabrera’s goal on a breakaway late in the second half from a through ball served by defender Brett Faggioni that gave the Coyotes a 3-0 lead was his fourth of the young season. His two assists upped his season total to three.

The Vulcans’ Go Eto averted a shutout by scoring on an unmarked drive from the 18-yard-line from an assist by Cameron Castillo in the 82nd minute.

CSUSB sophomore Billy Pellow scored his first collegiate goal just over five minutes into the match when he nailed a hard volley past Vulcans’ keeper Ivan Mercado off linked passes from senior defender Daniel McElroy and Cabrera.

In the 26th minute, junior Obi Agwu, a second-team all-CCAA player in 2008, earned his first goal of the season with a left-footed drive into the upper V of the net from the center of the box after Cabrera fed him a nifty pass.

Agwu had a point-blank try in the second half deflected over the crossbar by backup Vulcans goalkeeper Dane Kaylor.

CSUSB goalkeeper Arath DeLaRocha was required to save two shots – both of them on low, hard volleys by Hawaii-Hilo’s Alex Shaw, but was otherwise untested until Eto found space at the top of the box and delivered the ball past a leaping DeLaRocha into the net.
