Sustainability in Holualoa? Farm tour in Holualoa

MEDIA RELEASE

Sustainable Farm Tour, including a farm fresh lunch, 9:30a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15.

Not only possible but existent. Wai’aha Farm has been developing a sustainable model community on a portion of 100 acres right here in our backyard for the last several years. They are now ready for us to see their progress and learn from their experiences.

We are planning to start our visit to the farm with an informative presentation on “Sustainability in Holualoa” by director Mike Zelko. Also planned for the morning is a tour of their gardens, and a delicious luncheon made from their farm fresh organically grown produce (including a variety of meats, cheeses, fruit and vegetables.)

After lunch those who wish to see the plant nursery, fertilizer production using rabbits, the chicken tractors, moveable piggeries as well as sheep, goat and cattle grazing areas, will be guided on a four wheel drive experience to the upper farm. Included will be a discussion of their plans to add a certified slaughter house and dairy to the operation.

This informative, delicious and fun day will start at KOC at 9:30 am and return by 3 pm. The cost, including the farm fresh lunch, is $50 for KOC members and $65 for non-members. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience sustainability in action close to home, and registration is limited to 20 participants.
