The County will resurface one mile of Kuakini Highway starting just below Highway 11 to Pottery Terrace starting Thursday, September 10.

Roadwork will be between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays. One lane will be closed. Motorists are advised to use Walua Road or Lunapule to enter Pottery Terrace and Highway 11 or Ali’i Drive to enter Kailua-Kona. Motorists can expect detours, should plan on delays and are reminded to observe all traffic control devices while driving on Kuakini Highway during the scheduled roadwork, which will be completed September 18, weather permitting.

Kuakini Highway was paved in 2007 between Hualālai and Walua roads.

Also, roads in and around Sea view Circle are scheduled to be resurfaced in late September.

In conjunction with the Kuakini resurfacing, on Thursday, September 10, the County’s Highway Division will give a two-hour demonstration for a statewide supervisor and overseer conference on methods to resurface roads, and apply the level and finish courses.

One method is rubber locators, which have been installed down the center of Kuakini Highway. When covered with asphalt the four-inch locators are still visible above the surface and serve as a reference point for marking the road after resurfacing. This eliminates re-measuring and speeds up the striping process. Motorists can safely drive over the locators.

The County of Hawai’i’s Department of Public Works is responsible for a broad range of functional areas including streetlights, traffic signals, and signs, markings, and other traffic control facilities, and the repair, construction, maintenance and improvement of 941.76 miles of roadways.
