Beginning beekeeping classes & hands-on workshop

Learn how to raise and manage your own bees effectively whether it is for harvesting honey, pollinate your fruit trees and flowers or simply to build strong hives for local and global sustainability.

You need to know that effective bee management can have major impact on the health of your honeybee colony.

Get practical hands on bee management training with experienced beekeeper, Ron Hanson at is apiary in Pahoa starting Saturday, Sept. 12, from 1-4 p.m., and continuing for the next three consecutive Saturdays in September and October.

With four 3-hour workshops, training course includes:

  • Honey Bees Life History and Cycle
  • Behavior of different breeds
  • Retrieving and starting bees
  • Building equipment & hive set up
  • Hive inspection and techniques
  • Management & Manipulation
  • Harvesting honey & Other hive products
  • Varroa Mites in Hawaii & Other Enemies
  • Big Island Beekeepers Association

Included with the training is a comprehensive manual, complete with detailed photos and references. Hive equipment and tools are also available for a separate fee.

Cost: $150 for entire training (12 hours)
