Fire/rescue crews responded to a 5:19 p.m. alarm Friday (Aug 28) for a fire at the Young Brothers Kawaihae Harbor facility.
Upon arrival crews found two pallets of pool and spa supplies burning in an outdoor storage area. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and prevented the runoff of chemicals from entering the storm drain.
The probable cause of the blaze was reported to be leakage of an oxidizer chemical onto packaging material in the pallets of supplies.
The damaged pool and spa supplies were relocated to a safe area to allow drying, cessation of the chemical reaction and removal by the owner Monday.
The loss from the fire was estimated to be at $5,000. There were no injuries reported and no roadways were blocked.
