The Friends of the Libraries, Kona will host a free family literacy program, “Books are Building Blocks,” 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1 at Kailua Kona Public Library.  

This program will continue to be offered the first Tuesday evening of each month and will give families the opportunity to enjoy books being read aloud for children ages 5-7, 8-10 and a tween group as well.  

The adults will have their own reading group and must attend the program with their child(ren).  Participants will enjoy an hour of reading followed by a free book swap/give away for children and adults, as well as refreshments and door prizes.

This family reading program, which coincides with the children’s return to school, is intended to foster family bonding and promote literacy. 

A half hour introduction to the library will be featured from 4:30-5 p.m. Sept 1 for those unfamiliar with its services and how to apply for a library card. 

A similar program called Read Aloud America will be happening at Konawaena and Hookena Elementary schools this fall. 

Reading increases a child’s chances for success in school and beyond, and it’s FUN!
