The Board of Land and Natural Resources unanimously has approved the “Back to Basics” plan, or “Plan B.” The plan paves the way for the state to move forward on much-needed repair and maintenance to Hawaii’s recreational infrastructure.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources will adopt and phase-in model repair and maintenance standards as part of its “Plan B.”

Plan B focuses on two goals:

1. Increase routine repair, maintenance and improved operations this year; and

2. Start the longer-term process of raising new revenues from vacant urban lands so the state is prepared to begin new capital improvement projects when the legislature eventually gives approval.

The plan improves customer services for recreational users. In addition, it will create a one-stop shop for recreational information at state facilities, as well as provide state camping permits online.

“Our state recreational places continue to fall into disrepair and are in shameful condition,” according to the DLNR. “Our state land- and ocean-based recreational facilities are in dire need of tender loving care. We need to take steps now; we cannot wait for the legislature to approve capital improvements.”
