Sayre Foundation to honor firefighters Sept. 5

MEDIA RELEASE

DanielSayreFoundation-logoThe Daniel R. Sayre Memorial Foundation 12th Anniversary Benefit Awards Dinner/Silent Auction will honor exceptional Hawaii County Fire Department personnel for meritorious service above and beyond the call of duty.

The gourmet dinner/silent auction starts 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5 at The Fairmont Orchid, Hawaii at Mauna Lani Resort.

The silent auction includes opportunities to bid on stays at Fairmont Hotels, including a five-night stay at the Fairmont at St. Andrews, Scotland, and other 5-star resort destinations; collector items including a custom-made koa long board, a University of Texas swim cap signed by the Olympic swim team and coaches; watercolors and oils by famed local artists; rounds of golf at Big Island courses; gift certificates to outstanding restaurants and a huge array of activities. Cost to attend is $79 per person, inclusive.

Tables of 10 are available for purchase; patrons may also choose to sponsor dinners for one or more firefighters and their spouses.

Honored that evening will be nine members of the Fire Department’s fire/rescue and water safety teams who have performed meritorious service above and beyond the call of duty.

Proceeds from the event will purchase new and updated equipment for county fire/rescue teams. In the last 11 years the foundation – a 501©3 non-profit under the umbrella of the Hawaii Community Foundation – has raised more than $500,000. The funds have been used to enhance the department’s equipment and the training fire/rescue personnel receive.

“The men and women of the Fire Department regularly save the lives of island residents and visitors. Often this comes with great risk to fire/rescue personnel; you can help reduce their risk and support our island’s emergency preparedness by supporting The Daniel R. Sayre Memorial Foundation,” said Laura Mallery-Sayre, who with her husband Dr. Frank Sayre established the Foundation. “Due to the poor economic climate, the fire/emergency/rescue personnel need our help more than ever.”

This year, the department’s wish list includes jet skis for water rescue, dive computers, Billy Pugh Nets for use by rescue helicopters, night vision optics for helicopter pilots, rescue boat electronics and radar, rappelling gloves, binoculars, rescue harnesses and helmets and rescue surfboards.

For dinner reservations, call The Daniel R. Sayre Memorial Foundation at 329-8067 or 325-5456.
