why is it that inly on your web site’s bulletin, do interested persons find a time reference to event that is useful to normal people, ie; your site’s ref. bulletin mentions ‘Hawaii time’ and Zulu time? I have to ask as I’ve requestede my cur4rent alert supplier (tsunami-information-ioc@lists.unesco.org ) to define a time zone rather than zulu or GMT times, but never have I received any reply back. People needing this info are not ‘rocket scientists’ and it seems a public organization should be user friendly as opposed to survey tech and global time references which are not reqadily interpretatble to the public. Any reply or suggestions appreciated.

Z (Zulu time) also, UTC (Universal Coordinated Time or Universal Time Coordinated) and GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) all are the same thing.

Yes, it’s confusing and other than Swatch watch company coming up with Swatch Internet Time it looks like the world is stuck with these different names and time zones. Most science publications will use UTC as the standard which is why you’ll see that on most posts for H1N1 Flu stories from WHO or from NASA or NWS.

I have put a Time Zone Converter on the right sidebar. Over there –>

This will allow folks to convert various times listed in story posts to their own local time and day.

I’m still waiting for the metric system to grab hold in the U.S. We had a chance when fuel prices went so high they changed all the gas pumps to liters when the numbers were mechanical tumblers. But I’m sure the biggest drawback would be sports record books.
