Closures planned, expected due to Felicia

With the effects of Tropical Storm Felicia expected on the Big Island through several days, some closures have been announced.

County Civil Defense officials met Sunday afternoon with officials from state Civil Defense, the National Weather Service, county Public Works, police, fire and other agencies to discuss preparations statewide. 

Red Cross

Red Cross is ready to assist. Up to a dozen shelters may be opened across the island. 

Volunteers are needed to operate shelters and feed people, and may assist in conducting disaster assessment, delivering health and mental health services and handling logistics.

Anyone interested in volunteering may call 935-8305 in Hilo or 326-9488 in Kona. 

Schools

West Hawaii Explorations Academy in Kona and Kua O ka La in Pahoa will be closed  Monday. All other public schools are scheduled to be open.

Authorities will review the situation Monday before making a decision about Tuesday.

County Parks

As a precaution all county beach parks between Whittington Beach Park in Ka’u and Laupahoehoe Beach Park in Hamakua will be closed from 2:30p.m. Sunday afternoon through Wednesday morning. Hookena Beach Park in South Kona also will be closed.

Residents and beachgoers should be on the alert for sudden increases in surf heights.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Due to the potential severe weather hazard, Hawaii Volcanoes implemented the following closure Sunday, Aug. 9 until further notice: 

All backcountry trails and campsites within Hawaii Volcanoes are closed.

“We are taking the necessary steps now to ensure that our visitors and employees stay safe,” Chief Ranger Talmadge Magno said. “We will continue to monitor Tropical Storm Felicia and if weather conditions intensify, there could be more closures within the park.”

Recycling Centers

Due to the approaching storm, HI-5 Redemption Recycling, Mixed Recycling Centers and Reuse Centers will be closed at all County Transfer Stations on Monday, August 10 through Tuesday, August 11, 2009. These sites will reopen on Wednesday, August 12, 2009.

County Transfer Stations, Green Waste, and Scrap Metal Facilities will remain open until further notice.
