Volunteers needed to observe Mound Coral spawning in August

MEDIA RELEASE

Mound Coral, Porites lutea (formerly P. evermanni)

Mound Coral Porites lutea (formerly P. evermanni)

UH Sea Grant is asking for volunteers to report on Mound Coral Porites lutea (formerly P. evermanni) spawning during the month of August.

It seems that mound coral (actually there are two species, and we are targeting the one described and pictured on the data observation sheet) may spawn though out the day and it may spawn at night as well. The only way to get some idea of this coral’s habits is to ask you to, as you snorkel or SCUBA dive, please watch for ‘smoky look’ around mound corals in August.
