Fire/rescue crews responded to a 12:43 p.m. alarm for a brushfire in Kamuela View Estates at E. Ohina Street near Kawaihae Road Tuesday (July 21) afternoon. Brush burned in vacant land with heavy smoke and flames threatening four houses and several other structures in 15 mph winds.

A water truck, possibly from a nearby construction site, assisted putting down the blaze. The fire was in vacant land and flood control culvert and was under control by 1:07 p.m. with the fire declared out at 3 p.m.

The cause of the fire was determined to be children playing with a magnifying glass which accidentally ignited brush.
