Fire/Rescue crews responded to the one car accident on Ihope Road near N. Kulani Road in Kulani Tuesday (July 14) about 7:30 p.m. Two occupants were in the car, a male was taken to Hilo Medical Center for treatment, a female occupant did not need medical attention.

The car, travelling north on Ihope Street, severed a utility pole leaving it dangling from high power electric lines resting on trees. The power lines ignited several small fires on the treetops which were minimized by rainy conditions. A HELCO crew shut down power to Ihope Street so fire crews could tend to the small fires and a tow truck could remove the vehicle.
