Two Kona coast parks to close early on July 4

MEDIA RELEASE

KONA — Two Kona coast state parks will close early on Saturday, July 4, to reduce the chances of fire spreading from illegal fireworks. Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area and Kekaha Kai State Park will closed at 5:30 p.m. instead of the usual 7 p.m.

“We are closing these parks early to discourage use of fireworks, which is prohibited, and to protect the public and natural resources there,” said DLNR chairperson Laura H. Thielen

“During this dry summer season, we need to be especially careful to avoid endangering our forest and coastal areas so we can enjoy their beauty for generations. We ask the public’s help to protect our natural areas,” said Thielen.

The regular park daily closing time will resume on Sunday, July 5, at 8 p.m. for Hapuna Beach and 7 p.m. for Kekaha Kai State Park.
