The Vulcan Basketball School opened today with a very solid turnout. 97 Munchkins (8-12 year-olds) attended the morning session and 82 Elites (13-18 year-olds) attended the afternoon session. The Munchkins were an enthusiastic group, making the UH Gym ring with their yells of “Ready!” and “Defense!”. The older Elites feature the likes of Will Scanlan-Leite and Sebastian Ohara-Saft from St. Joseph, Amber Pocock from Kau, Brandon Bautista from Kohala, and even Stevi Cooper, attending the camp all the way from Reno High School in Nevada. The volunteer coaches include the usual suspects of Bill O’Rear and Jimmy Yagi, as well as UHH’s men’s basketball head coach Jeff Law, UHH’s women’s basketball head coach Daphne Honma, Hamilton Manley, UHH’s men’s basketball assistant coach David Kaneshiro, St. Joseph’s assistant coach Scott Saft, BIIF referee and UH official Linda Lopez, just to name a few. Also on the coaching team is Andy Ground, a former Vulcan basketball player and current head coach of Saddleback Junior College in Mission Viejo, California.
The camp runs five days, starting June 23 and wrapping up on Saturday, June 27. The morning sessions run from 9am until 1pm and the afternoon sessions run from 2pm until 7:30pm.
