Seventeen UH-Hilo athletes named to the 2008-09 PacWest academic all-conference team

The honor was announced on Tuesday, June 16, by the conference media relations office in Queen Creek, Ariz.

Earning the recognition were Justine Abella (tennis), Amanda Adams (basketball), Ashley Benson (cross country), Jacob Briggs (basketball), Eve Castaing (tennis), Laurent Colombo (tennis), Timothy Glick (soccer), Jessica Hanato (basketball), George Ichimaru (soccer), Akimi Kifune (tennis), Dana Lee (softball), Christine Pagatpatan (tennis), Brian Shannon (baseball), John Smith (basketball), Lauren Tonokawa (volleyball), Randi Walters (soccer) and Brian Yannutz (cross country).

“I am so proud to know that our student-athletes are not only highly competitive on the field, but also excelling academically in the classroom,” said UHH Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Acting Athletic Director Dr. Luoluo Hong. “These honorees reflect the best of what Vulcan Athletics has to offer!”

A total of 145 student-athletes earned the academic award for compiling a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30.

Student-athletes must be in their second year of competition at the school, and must be at least a sophomore or second-year transfer student, to be considered eligible for the award. Freshman, red-shirt freshman and first-year transfers are not eligible. They also must be a starter or a reserve that participates in at least 50 percent of scheduled contests or would have participated in at least 50 percent of contest except for injury.
