Kona Brewing Company named fastest growing brewery in U.S.

Kailua-Kona, Big Island of Hawaii — Kona Brewing Company recently was named the fastest growing top-50 craft brewing company in the country based on 2008 sales figures. The Brewers Association, the trade association that represents American craft beer, recently released its annual industry review, which showed Kona Brewing Company rising to the 14th largest craft brewing company in the country and posting 51 percent growth. The next fastest growing top-50 craft brewery posted 39 percent growth.

“Even with the tough economic conditions our country faces, folks still seem to want some ‘Liquid Aloha.’ We showed remarkable growth in 2008,” said Kona Brewing Company’s President and CEO Mattson Davis. “While some of this growth was due to launching new markets, our existing markets just continue to crank as well.”

Kona Brewing Company sold 94,558 barrels of beer in 2008. That translates to 189,116 kegs or 2,931,298 gallons of beer. It jumped up to the 14th spot from the 24th position the previous year.

Kona Brewing Company’s 2009 growth is ahead of forecasts. Davis predicts sales will increase by another 30 percent by year-end. This year Kona Brewing Company has added several new mainland markets, including Connecticut, District of Columbia, Maine, Maryland, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont.

Kona Brewing Company was started in the spring of 1994 by a father and son team that had a dream to create fresh, local island brews made with spirit, passion and quality. It is a Hawaii-born and Hawaii-based craft brewery that prides itself on brewing the freshest beer of exceptional quality, closest to market to minimize its carbon footprint. The company is headquartered where it began, in Kailua-Kona on Hawaii’s Big Island. It has grown into Hawaii’s largest brewery, has three restaurant sites in Hawaii and beer distribution reaching 28 states and Japan. For information call 808-334-BREW or visit
