(Activity updates are written by scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.)Â
The breakout within the Royal Gardens subdivision remained active as of Thursday, June 11, but had diminished greatly compared to the previous week. A small breakout on the coastal plain active late last week was stagnant by early this week.Â
No other active surface flows have been reported. The Waikupanaha and Kupapau ocean entries continue to produce prominent plumes as lava spills into the ocean.
At Kilauea’s summit, the vent within Halemaumau Crater continues to emit elevated amounts of volcanic gas, resulting in high concentrations of sulfur dioxide downwind. Bright glow from the vent was visible at night through the past week. Visits to the vent by HVO geologists have verified that lava remains at a fairly constant level about 100 yards below the floor of Halemaumau crater.Â
One earthquake beneath Hawaii Island was reported felt this past week. A magnitude-2.2 earthquake occurred at 4:14 p.m., Sunday, June 7and was located 8 miles west of Kawaihae at a depth of 6 miles.
