Police warn of parcel scam

MEDIA RELEASE

The Hawai’i Police Department is warning Big Island residents to be aware of bogus calls from persons saying they work for parcel delivery companies.

A Volcano resident was called by a man who said he worked for FedEx and wanted directions to the resident’s property for a parcel delivery. The resident did not give out any information and called the FedEx number in the phone book, where the resident found out that there was no parcel for delivery.

The resident returned the original phone call and the person on the other end said it was a wrong number and hung up.

Police believe these calls are an attempt to locate unoccupied homes or to get address information for future burglaries.

Police advise citizens not to give out any personal information over the phone.
