A 21-year-old HÅlualoa man died Sunday (May 31) from injuries he sustained in a one-vehicle crash on Route 190 at the 17-mile marker in North Kona.
The victim was identified as John H. Tuhy of a HÅlualoa address.
Responding to a 2:37 a.m. call, Kona patrol officers and traffic investigators determined that the victim was operating a 2002 Dodge Neon four-door sedan and traveling north on Route 190 when he lost control, crossed the centerline, ran off the left side of the road and overturned.
The victim was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:16 a.m.
The victim was wearing his seat belt. It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were involved but speed was a factor in the crash.
Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

This is the ninth traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with eleven at this time last year.
