HPU women’s basketball signs recruits Buster and Awa-Williams

MEDIA RELEASE

Honolulu, HI (5/21/09) – HPU women’s basketball announced the signing of two players for the 2009-10 season. Joining the Sea Warriors will be Courtney Buster and Jazzmin Awa-Williams. Both players have two years of eligibility remaining.

Buster comes to HPU after two seasons at City College of San Francisco. For CCSF, she averaged 12.5 points, nine rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game. “Courtney comes to HPU as the first true center in the history of our young program,” says HPU Head Coach Jeff Harada. “Her length and athleticism fill a huge void for us, and she has the potential to be one of the premier post players in the PacWest. Her ability to alter shots immediately upgrades our defense, and her athleticism around the basket will make her very hard to guard.”

The 6-3 Buster was a First-Team North Coast Conference selection, and also earned a spot on the California All-State Second-Team. Her team finished 33-3 last season, and advanced to the Elite 8 of the California JUCO State Tournament. Buster had season-highs of 30 points, 20 rebounds and eight blocks (twice).

Awa-Williams, a former Hawai‘i prep standout, returns home after two seasons at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. For the Mountain Lions, she averaged 13.4 points and pulled down 5.3 rebounds per game. The 5’9 forward was also a Second-Team Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference selection. She led the team in scoring 10 times, and had a season-high 27 points against Adams State College.

“Jazzy is a tremendous all-around player who will be a huge addition to our team,” praises Harada. “She is a proven scorer at this level and her experience, toughness, and versatility will complement our young team well.”

Awa-Williams graduated from Konawaena High school (Kona, HI) and was a teammate of current Sea Warrior Mana Hopkins. She was a four-time Hawai‘i All-State selection, and won the state championship as a freshman and senior. She was also named the 2007 HawaiiHoops.com Player of the Year.
