During the week of May 12, 2009, through May 18, 2009, Big Island police arrested 19 motorists for drunk driving. Six of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash. One was under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 500 DUI arrests compared with 534 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.4 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 615 major accidents so far this year compared with 709 during the same period last year, a decrease of 13.3 percent.
So far this year, there were seven traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with eleven during the same period last year, a decrease of 36.4 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
