Kailua Park Master Plan meetings set for May 16-18

The County of Hawaii Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is preparing a master plan for Kailua Park, located in Kailua-Kona on Hawaii Island. The 117-acre project area includes the existing County-managed Kailua Park, and the former Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area, which was recently turned over to the County.

The purpose of the project is to develop a comprehensive vision for use and future development of Kailua Park over the next 20 to 30 years. The plan will consider the park’s location, natural and cultural resources, and the desires and visions of the community.

The planning process, which is expected to run through the third quarter of 2009, will include meetings with various stakeholders, an intensive design charrette, and a series of public information meetings.

A design charrette open to the public has been scheduled for May 15-18, 2009 at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.
