Man robbed at gunpoint in Hawi Saturday

The Hawai’i Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Section in Kona is investigating a robbery Saturday (May 2) around 6:30 p.m. in Hawi.

The 69-year-old victim reported that upon returning home to his apartment, a man wearing a dark ski mask approached him, held a silver handgun to his head and demanded money. He was then escorted into his apartment, where a male wearing a white towel over his head was already inside searching the unit.

The victim was not injured after handing over an undisclosed amount of money. Also taken were a silver “Old West” replica long-barrel revolver handgun and prescription medication.

The suspects fled on foot northbound on Akoni Pule Highway. One is described as 30–40 years old, about 5-foot-10 with a medium-dark complexion and a stocky build. The other is described as 17–22 years old, about 5-foot-5 with a medium-dark complexion and a thin build.

Police ask that anyone with information about this case call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. All Crime Stoppers information is kept confidential.
