Waiphau, HI (4/24/09) – At Hans L’Orange Park, the HPU baseball team was swept by UH-Hilo in a PacWest doubleheader. UH-Hilo took game one 8-2, and followed with a 14-6 win in the nightcap. HPU falls to 21-16 overall and 9-9 in the PacWest. UHH improves to 20-17 overall and 11-11 in conference.

In the opener, the Sea Warriors were outmatched by Vulcan starter Kekoa Lee (6-3). He pitched a complete game allowing no earned runs on two hits with seven strikeouts. Caelen O’Meara (5-2) received the loss for HPU allowing five runs on nine hits in five innings of work.

Matt Hassenritter led UH-Hilo, batting 4-4 with two runs and five RBI.

Cheynne Hirota and Sean Winston each collected a hit for HPU.

In the nightcap, the Sea Warriors saw a 6-3 fifth inning lead slip away. UH-Hilo plated three runs in the top of the first inning, but a Cheynne Hirota three-run homerun in the bottom of the inning tied the game for HPU. Hirota batted 2-2 with one run and five RBI.

The Sea Warriors plated three more runs in the second inning, but the lead would not hold up. Starter Chad Wagner (3-6) received the loss, allowing six earned runs on nine hits with four strikeouts in five and one-third innings of work.

Sean Winston and Blake Amaral added two hits each for HPU. Keoni Manago led UHH batting 4-5 with four runs and two RBI.

Vulcan reliever Tyler Simao earned the win, pitching three innings allowing no runs on three hits.

HPU and UH-Hilo continue their series tomorrow, Saturday with games three and four. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 4:00 p.m. at Hans L’Orange Park, and will be broadcasted live on OC-16 TV and AM 1500 radio.
