Project Compassion: Family Support Services

MEDIA RELEASE

Family Support Services will be participating in Project Compassion this month. Everyone is invited to join in recognition of Child Abuse and Prevention Month, 4-9 p.m. Sunday, April 19 at Denny’s Restaurant in Kona.

For those five hours, Denny’s has agreed to donate 20 percent of gross revenue, plus all tips, to Family Support Services.

Those who will be waiting tables during the evening include: Danny Jesser and Eddie O from the Big Island Big Morning Show on Lava 105; Wally Lau, representing the Mayor’s Office; and Pastor Sonny Shimaoka. Board members and staff from Family Support Services also will be chipping in.

Family Support Services, whose mission is “to support families and communities in the love and care for our children,” was formed in 1979 by members of the community who were concerned about the life-long consequences of child abuse and neglect.

Since that time, the agency has focused on children and families through various programs in the community, and now provides supportive services to more than 3,500 Hawaii Island individuals and families each year.

Project Compassion is a joint project between the Rotary Club of Kona, Denny’s Restaurant, and non-profit organizations in the community. Since the initial event in December 2008, the project has raised more than $11,000 to benefit several non profits in their work in the community.
