Last Friday, police received two separate reports about two females who approached homeowners under the ruse that one of them needed to use the bathroom. In both cases, one woman distracted the homeowner while the other, who was described as appearing to be pregnant, went inside. The implied pregnancy may have been part of the ruse.

The two women left in what was described as either a red or maroon sedan. Both victims later discovered that money was missing from their homes.

Police ask that anyone with information about this case or about the whereabouts of Kainoa or Oshiro call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311.

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 39-8181 in Kona. All Crime Stoppers calls are kept confidential.

Hawai’i Police are investigating at least two burglaries that occurred Friday (March 27) in the Hilo area.

At about 3:00 p.m. South Hilo Patrol officers responded to a residence on West Kawailani Street after the owner of the residence reported that two unidentified females, claiming to be relatives, persuaded the elderly occupants to allow them into the residence. Once inside, one female suspect stated that she needed to use the bathroom. The second female distracted the occupants while the first female suspect apparently walked unaccompanied throughout the residence. After the suspects left, the occupants discovered that the female suspect had removed an undisclosed amount of money.

The victim described one of the female suspects as being about 5-foot-5, about 150 pounds, between 30 and 40 years old with a fair complexion, and possibly local. She was last seen wearing what was described as light-colored clothing. She was further described as appearing to be pregnant.

The second female was described as being about 5-foot-4, about 130 pounds, between 30-40 years old, with a fair complexion, and also possibly being local. She was also described as wearing light-colored clothing.

According to the victim, it was believed they were related, as they resembled each other.

They left in what was described as either a red or maroon 4-door sedan.

At about 5:30 p.m., South Hilo patrol officers responded to a residence on West Puainako Street after the owner reported to police that at about 5:00 p.m., two females contacted the resident under the same ruse of desperately needing to use the bathroom. One of the female suspects entered the residence to use the bathroom while the second female suspect distracted the elderly victim by remaining outside of the residence.

After several minutes, the suspect exited the residence and both suspects left the area in what was also described as a red sedan, possibly a hatchback or station wagon.

The victim checked the residence and discovered that a handbag containing its contents and an undisclosed amount of cash had been removed from the residence.

The description of the females was nearly identical to the ones provided from the incident reported earlier.

Police want to issue a warning to the public about allowing strangers into their residence for purposes such as borrowing a phone, using the bathroom, etc. Police ask that anyone who is approached by any suspicious individual(s) for these reasons politely refuse entry and instead attempt to obtain a description of the subject(s), their mode of transportation, and to call police.

Police ask that anyone with information about these crimes call Officers Chris Kapua-Allison or Anson Caceres of the South Hilo Patrol Division at 961-2213 or the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311.

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 29-8181 in Kona. All Crime Stoppers calls are kept confidential.
