Greenwell Farms helps fight against cancer

MEDIA RELEASE

Two hundred pounds (valued at $2,400) of Greenwell Farms Kona coffee will be donated to the first-of-its- kind Grounds for Health specialty coffee auction June 2.

Grounds for Health, a non-profit organization provides health care services to women in coffee-growing communities who may lack access to healthcare.

“Greenwell Farms has been in the coffee industry for 150 years and knows first hand the ups and downs of farming,” said Tommy Greenwell, general manager of Greenwell Farms. “By participating in this unique auction, we are trying to help our fellow farmers around the world.”

The auction is designed to bring together the world’s largest coffee producers to provide goodwill and international collaboration to the global farming community.

Funds generated from the auction will be used for health care equipment, training and technical assistance to in-country partners,  and to strengthen local treatment capacity, develop a network of community health promoters, and educate women in coffee-growing communities.

Collaborating with regional coffee unions, community members and in-country health care professionals aim to increase awareness about cervical cancer and improve existing cancer prevention systems.

Greenwell Farms was established in 1850 by Henry Nicholas Greenwell. Henry spent the next 40 years farming, ranching and perfecting his Kona coffee, soon exporting it to Europe and the Americas. In 1873, the President of the Kaiser’s Exposition awarded Greenwell a “Recognition Diploma” for his Kona coffee at the World’s Fair in Vienna, Austria. Today, Greenwell Farms is managed by fourth generation Tom Greenwell. Greenwell Farms grows its own coffee on a portion of 100 acres of the most productive land in the Kona District and purchases coffee cherry from over 200 selected farmers within the Kona region.
