Volunteers clear historic Ala Loa trail in Hookena

About 15 volunteers early Sunday morning continued the clearing of the Ala Loa trail in Hookena. Part of a trail system that was established in the 1840s to augment the better known beach road, or Ala Kahakai, the Ala Loa carried commerce until the mauka highway was established in the early 1900s. Volunteers gather every other weekend to continue the work to reclaim trails that were declared public by the Hawaiian Kingdom’s Highways Act of 1892.
