Sir Winston Churchill once said, “Never, never, never, never give up.†Chaminade played with that mentality today against the UH Hilo Vulcans. The first game of the day was a little shaky for the Swords as the fell 12 to 0 by way of the mercy rule; however, they bounced back in the second and won by a score of 3 to 2 in extra innings.
Game # 1- The Swords for were not able to stop the big bats of Hilo in this one, UHH exploded for 14 hits and won the first one easily scoring 12 runs. The offense tried rally with 16 total at bats, but just ended up falling short in the end with only 3 hits.
Chelsi Walls is charged with the loss. She faced 34 batters, gave up 14 hits, 11 earned runs, walked 4 and struck out 2.
Game # 2- The second game of the day started out a little rough for the Swords, the third batter of the game UH Hilo crushed a hard hit fly ball deep to centerfield scoring the first run of the game. Chaminade would not allow another run until the Top of the 6th inning when Hilo scored the second run and tied the game at 2 a piece.
Everything seemed to work for the Swords today in this game; they were hitting the ball well, fielding the ball well and seeing the ball well. They ended up with 11 total hits and got to the plate a total of 38 times as a team. Kasy’e Lalau pitched 9 solid innings for Chaminade; she faced 41 batters, gave up only 2 earned runs on 11 hits, she struck out 2 and walked 1 batter.
No one player stood out today, everyone one of them played their hearts out today and in the end captured their 4th win of the season in dramatic fashion. In the bottom of the 9 inning, RF Erin Keelan comes up to the plate smashes a line drive that sails over the right fielders head that allows her enough time to earn a triple and put herself in a situation to score the game winning run. Teammate Chasity Senas, did just that. She hit a ground ball up to left field that scored Keelan from third base and Chaminade won in epic fashion. They never gave up and played hard through out the entire 9 inning battle and when it mattered most, teammates did what they had to do get the W.
With the win Chaminade improves to 4-16 on the season. The Swords take on Dixie State University at Central Oahu Regional Park (CORPS), on Tuesday March 17th, First pitch is set for 4:30PM HST.
