Straight from the Capitol: Josh Green

(Editor’s note: The Legislature is in full swing. Here’s what some of your elected officials say about some of the issues. Call them, write them, tell them how you feel. Seriously, they love to get e-mail … and they need to know how you want them to vote. )

– Most would agree on the top two or three major issues facing this year’s Legislature, but which do you believe needs to be addressed immediately?

We need to address the health care crisis immediately. We also need to make smart decisions about our economy to survive this recession.

– What is the best way to address it?

I am sponsoring a healthcare reform bill which restructures the health care safety net in Hawaii to assure that everyone gets quality care and that the healthcare system itself becomes sustainable and a better fit for our state.

– Is there any issue you believe should be addressed, but likely will not get attention this session?

Equality issues for all people.

– Budget cuts are inevitable. Which areas are most vulnerable and which areas will you fight to protect?

I will fight hardest to prevent cuts in programs which affect children or the mentally ill. I also feel there should not be any cuts in education programs.

– Are there any issues specific to your district?

West Hawaii needs a college campus and a new healthcare facility, in addition to roads to alleviate the traffic problem.

– How can Big Island residents help you get things done?

Our residents should contact the Senate President and the Speaker of the House every week to fight for our share of resources and for a safe and improved healthcare system.

– Perennial issues such as gambling, assisted suicide and same-sex marriage are likely to crop up again. A quick ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer on each, please …

I believe everyone should be treated compassionately an with respect. This belief will guide my decisions on controversial issues.

– What’s the best part of your job? What’s the part you enjoy the least?

Best:  Working with people to solve big problems.

Worst: Missing time with my daughter and wife.

– Which annual Big Isle event do you look forward to the most? Ironman, Merrie Monarch, Kona Coffee Cultural Festival, Waimea Cherry Blossom Heritage Festival, Big Island Film Festival, or something else?

I love the Iron Man.

– What was the last CD you bought?

The Doors Greatest Hits

– Where’s your favorite Big Island spot to relax and enjoy the scenery?

Hapuna Beach

– Is there any question you wish we had asked? Go ahead, make it up!

Question: How and why do you work both as an ER doctor and a Senator?

Answer: I believe having a profession makes a person a better informed legislator about the problems real people face. And besides life is short.

– Where can your constituents find you? (Phone, e-mail, snail mail, etc)
