January updates from KVBID

MEDIA RELEASE

New Interpretive Signage in the Works

KVBID has partnered with the Hawaii Tourism Authority to bring additional grant monies to the Village. As part of HTA’s natural resources grant program, monies awarded will go toward installation of interpretive signs near ocean access points around Kailua Bay.
Signage will educate and inform visitors and residents of the history of Kailua Village and ways to respect and sustain ocean resources. Signage will also provide information about nearby cultural heritage sites such as Ahuena Heiau An accompanying brochure will further the message.
A request for proposal (RFP) will be issued in the coming weeks
for research, design, fabrication and installation of the signs and
printed material. Project completion is targeted for August 2009.

Landscape Palette Project Nears Completion

Chris Hart & Partners, who successfully bid on the RFP to update the landscape palette for Kailua Village, is nearing conclusion of the project. Their scope of work involved reviewing existing plans at the county level and updating the Village palette through integration of existing landscaped areas in public spaces, recommendations for irrigation needs and use of more native and drought-tolerant plantings. The palette design is in context with the environment, the district’s natural surroundings, and existing plantings.
The intent is to bridge what is already in place and future projects by providing a systematic approach to improvements and guidelines. The palette document will become a useful tool for landowners with new projects and for future public landscaping projects the district may undertake. It will be presented to the county for review next month.

Publication Racks 2009 Project Priority

KVBID’s Placemaking Committee will be tackling the proliferation of publication racks in the Village. With the goal to mirror the success that was implemented in Waikiki, the committee will be working to find an attractive unit that can house all the publications together. The units would be designated for certain locations only and other non-conforming racks would be restricted.
