This is a weather informational update for Wednesday afternoon, January 14, at 4 o’clock.

The National Weather Service has issued a high surf warning for North and West facing shores of Hawai’i Island. Surf heights are expected to build to 10’ to 15’ through Saturday.

The National Weather Service also forecasts winds to build up to 30 miles per hour beginning Thursday through Saturday with winds gusts over 40 mph at elevations over 6,000 feet. Winds will be out of the West and Southwest.

Due to the forecasts of surf and wind, the following advisories are issued:

  • Oceanfront residents, beach goers and campers are urged to be on the alert for high and dangerous surf conditions. Extreme caution should be taken in all coastal and ocean activities.
  • Owners of small boats and aircraft should take extra measures to secure their crafts.
  • Take measures to secure or remove items around your property that may be affected by the strong winds. These include tarps, lawn furniture, trash cans, and other light unsecured objects.
  • As in all high wind conditions, do expect the possibility of power and phone interruptions.
  • Motorists should be on the alert for debris on the roadway and remember that closures can occur without any warning.

Again, the National Weather Service has issued a high surf warning for the North and West facing shores of the Big Island beginning this evening and into Saturday and also forecasts higher than normal winds for all parts of the Big Island beginning Thursday through Saturday.
