VolunteerMatch prepares for MLK Day of Service

MEDIA RELEASE / PRWEB

The Martin Luther King Day of Service is Monday, Jan. 19. In preparation for what many say will be the largest Day of Service in history, VolunteerMatch is reminding individuals, organizations, and business leaders that now is the time to plan MLK Day activities — and www.volunteermatch.org is the place to start.

Since its launch in 1998, VolunteerMatch has grown to support a social network of more than 2 million civic-minded users benefiting 62,000 of the nation’s nonprofit organizations.

Last week, President-Elect Barack Obama, together with community leaders and nonprofits from across the nation, called on Americans to follow the lead of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and commit to service and volunteering on the MLK Day of Service.

“Once in a generation, a movement founded in excitement and hope transforms the way Americans come together to strengthen our communities,” said Greg Baldwin, president of VolunteerMatch. “A decade ago a similar spirit brought together a group of young professionals to help good people and good causes to connect and VolunteerMatch was born.”

Any volunteer can use the service to find a local volunteer opportunity, and any nonprofit in need of volunteers can use the service to more efficiently and effectively recruit volunteers. With a recent substantial upgrade to its systems, VolunteerMatch users can now enter their city or ZIP code and a few words to describe what they want to do to search the network. This winter VolunteerMatch expects to generate its 4 millionth all-time volunteer referral.
