Randrup family asking for public’s help

The family of a man who was shot to death in Puna is asking the public for help as police develop leads in the case.

Hans Christian Randrup

Jon Randrup, of Nevada, wants to know who shot his 27-year-old nephew Hans Christian Randrup and how his 60-year-old brother Randal K. Randrup ended up in a  coma following a one-car crash in Captain Cook. The father and son shared a home in Leilani Estates.

Hans Christian Randrup, 27, was shot multiple times and his body thrown over a sea cliff at MacKenzie State Park. The body was discovered around noon Friday, Dec. 12.

Police have not announced any arrests.

Randal K. Randrup, who worked in construction, was being sought by police when they discovered he had been involved in a crash on Hawaii Belt Road in Captain Cook at 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 13.

He was transported to The Queens Medical Center on Oahu, where he was confined in critical condition. His condition has reportedly improved since then.

Jon Randrup said he wanted to share a photo of his nephew in hopes it sparks new information in the murder case.

He also said a trust fund account has been set up to benefit the family and friends of Chris Randrup. Donations can be made at any branch of First Hawaiian Bank.

Hundreds of Randrup’s friends gathered at a memorial service Sunday, Dec. 21 at Pohoiki Hot Pond and remembered Randrup as a world-class bodyboarder — a “soul surfer” rather than a competitor.

Police ask anyone with information about this case call Detective Rio Amon-Wilkins at 961-2386 or the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 or 329-8181.
