UPDATE: Charges in UH-Hilo detonations

Detectives from the Hawaii Police Department have charged 20-year-old Edward E. Wine of Hilo with one count of first-degree terroristic threatening in connection with explosions on the UH-Hilo campus.

At 1:16 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, Hilo patrol officers responded to a report of an explosion heard at the UH-Hilo campus. While officers were on the scene, a second explosion was heard.

Police located two possible explosive devices tied to a tree. One had detonated while the other had not. Another detonated device was also located. Assistance from U.S. Army Explosive Ordinance Disposal personnel was requested to disarm the unexploded device.

No injuries were reported.

Wine was arrested at the Hilo police station Thursday afternoon after voluntarily presenting himself at the request of investigators.

He was charged Friday, Dec. 19 shortly before 7 p.m. and released on his own recognizance. He is scheduled to appear at 1:30 p.m Jan. 20 in South Hilo District Court.
